What is psychotherapy? In short, psychotherapy is the treatment of psychological problems through talking about one's thoughts and emotions with a therapist, it can otherwise be called ‘talking therapy’.
Psychotherapists follow different scientific traditions to inform their practice of which psychoanalytic psychotherapy is done. Talking therapies can be done individually, on a one to one basis, or in groups. There is mounting scientific evidence to support the use of talking therapies in most mental health problems.
Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy: Psychoanalysis, the oldest of all psychotherapies was founded by Sigmund Freud in the last decades of the 19th century. Psychoanalytic therapies differ from most other therapies in the importance it holds for the role of unconscious mental functions and its impact on our daily lives and relationships.
Psychoanalytic or psychodynamic psychotherapy is derived from psychoanalysis with the same core focus on the unconscious. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is used mainly for people who have problems in relationships, either with themselves or others. Other therapies like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) treat mental health problems through our conscious thoughts, beliefs, and emotions. The diagnosis of the mental health problem determines the type of psychotherapy recommended.
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of mental and behavioral disorders. Psychiatrists are able to use medication to treat mental disorders but that is not the only treatment option open to them. Mental disorders occur due to a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors in differing ratios.
At REVIVE Wellbeing Centre, we believe the doctor-patient relationship and the level of trust they achieve play a very important role in effecting treatment. Medication is used according to the latest evidence-based on international guidelines in a safe and controlled manner. Covert medication, i.e giving patients medicines without their knowledge is discouraged. For patients who do not recognize the need for treatment, a firm but honest approach tends to pay off in the long run.
